Agriscience Fair

The National FFA Agriscience Fair recognizes student researchers studying the application of agricultural scientific principles and emerging technologies in agricultural enterprises. The agriscience fair is for middle and high school students. Participation begins at the local level and progresses to state and national levels.

 

Silent Springs FFA is an active participant in the National FFA Agriscience Fair.  Throughout the summer, each student is given instruction and guidance in research design.  University of Alaska science department staff members encourage and council students throughout the process.  Students are required to complete their project by December 1st of that year.  Projects can be entered in to local homeschool and area science fairs, and the Alaska State FFA Convention.

 

Silent Springs FFA Students:

1) Propose a new question or problem that will help advance agriculture

2) Write a paper about current research that addresses the student's question or problem

3) Develop a research design 

4) Perform the research

5) Collect, record, organize, and analyze the data

6) Write a summary and propose ideas for further research

7) Prepare a visual display of the project

8) Give an oral presentation and answer questions about the science

 

To qualify for the national agriscience fair students must:

  • Be in grades 7 - 12.

  • Conduct a scientific research project pertaining to the agriculture and food science industries and present their findings to a panel of judges with a display and a report.

  • Be selected as the state winner at their state agriscience fair.

  • Be electronically declared through FFA.org by the state FFA association by July 1.

  • Submit their full written report and application to the National FFA Organization postmarked by July 1.

  • Be selected as one of the top 12 in their respective category and division.

 

Agriscience Fair Categories and Divisions

Agriscience Fair Categories

Students can compete in the national agriscience fair in one of six categories:

  • Animal Systems

  • Environmental Services/Natural Resource Systems

  • Food Products and Processing Systems

  • Plant Systems

  • Power, Structural and Technical Systems

  • Social Science

Agriscience Fair Divisions

Students can compete in the national agriscience fair as an individual or with a team.

  • Division 1 – individual member in grades 7 and 8

  • Division 2 – team of two members in grades 7 and 8

  • Division 3 – individual member in grades 9 and 10

  • Division 4 – team of two members in grades 9 and 10

  • Division 5 – individual member in grades 11 and 12

  • Division 6 – team of two members in grades 11 and 12
